Bordighera jardin experimentalUn giardino medioevale di palme
Alla fine del 2008, è natto un progetto di giardino sperimentale, nel palmeto medioevale di Bordighera (Italia). Questo progetto concerna l'ultimo giardino di palme del palmeto storico, ed anche l’uno dei scarsi giardini medioevali essistente. Situata a 43° 47', il palmeto di Bordighera è anche il piu settentrionali dei palmeti da dattero (Phoenix dactylifera). Secondo la leggenda locale, è l'anacoreta e fabbro Sant'Ampelio, il santo patrono di Bordighera, che avrebbe introdotto le palme nel IV secolo nella regione. Il palmeto attuale risale al Medioevo, al momento della creazione del villaggio. E diventato, nel corso dei secoli, un'importante attività economica per molte famiglie. La sua produzione concernava le foglie di palma per le feste religiose ebraiche (Soukkhot) e cristiane (Dies Palmarum). Situato alla foce di un torrente mediterraneo, il palmeto storico di Bordighera dispone di abbondanti risorse idriche, pero la disposizione di stretti terrazzamenti e la mancanza di collegamenti stradali ha reso difficile la sua conversione. Inoltre, c’è una forte pressione ediliziale in tutta la regione, in particolare su questa valle che si trova sul lungomare, a soli 15 km dalla Costa Azzurra (10 milioni di turisti / anno). Tutti questi vincoli sono molto simile a quelle conosciuti da molti palmeti nel mondo mediterraneo. Il terreno del giardino sperimentale è costituito da una dozzina di fasce molto strette e molto ripide. Dispone inoltre di due vasche, una casa piccola ed i resti di una cultura importante di fogliame ornamentale (ruscus), praticato all'ombra delle palme e marginalmente sotto serra. A l’inizio del progetto, le palme erano in uno stato di degenerazione dovuto essenzialmente, oltre alla età avanzata di alcuni esemplari, alla mancanza di irrigazione e di concimazione. La condizione del sito, tuttavia, era molto megliore che il resto del palmeto, diventata oggi abbandonata in seguito alla graduale eliminazione della maggior parte delle colture, compresa la palmiculture in questi ultimi trent'anni.
 
Il sperimento in corso concerna i temi successivi:
* l'analisi genetica delle palme del sito al di fuori della loro area di ripartizione naturale di cultura, 
* il bisogno idrico della palma,
* la gestione del suolo e dei rifiuti vegetali,
* la gestione delle colture associate,
* la rigenerazione del palmeto storico.
La ricerca è condotta nell'interesse dello sviluppo sostenibile, utilizzando pocchi mezzi ed orientata verso l’ottimizzazione del’agro-biodiversità. Il Giardino e, d’altra parte, la sede di una sperimentazione di lotta ecologica contro il Punteruolo Rosso delle palme (Red Palm Weevil).

PALMICOLTURA

La palma da dattero necessita grandi quantità di acqua durante la stagione calda. Il sistema di irrigazione tradizionale era basata su canali di distribuzione del’acqua del torrente, a destinazione dei terreni e delle loro bacini. Diversi pozzi, a balancia e a ruota idraulica, compietavano il dispositivo, che anche alimentava i mulini del villaggio. La prima fase del nostro intervento è stato quello di ripristinare l’irrigazione.
 
IRRIGAZIONE
Con l'abbandono delle terre, e la scomparsa dei dispositivi tradizionali, le palme conoscono uno stress significativo durante i mesi estivi, il che limita il loro sviluppo. Un dispositivo di irrigazione a goccia a goccia è stata attuata nel giardino sperimentale per metà del terreno al fine di valutarne l'efficacia. Abbiamo installato anche un dispositivo manuale in parallelo per facilitare l'irrigazione delle aiuole, dove si procede all’introduzione di piante asssociate alle palme.

La seconda fase dell'esperimento coinvolti il concime del terreno. Diversi dispositivi di pacciamatura sono stati installati per questo scopo. La pacciamatura ha un doppio vantaggio, di favorire l’amendamento per il suolo e di limitare l'evapotraspirazione. Sette tipi di pacciamatura sono stati testati:
* Corteccia di pino, un tipo di copertura utilizzata in spazi verdi, che è un materiale importato
* Paglia, che non è una risorsa locale, ma è molto più economico,
* Foglie di quercia tra cui quercia da sughero (Quercus suber), una risorsa locale anche in pericolo,
* Foglie e noccioli d'ulivo, una risorsa abbondante sul sito
* Cane di Provenza (Aurundo donax), un'altra risorsa altrettanto abbondante sul sito,
* Copertura di edera che crescono sul sito e minacciano la sopravvivenza degli alberi
* Un ultimo tipo di pacciamatura forestale è stato installato a partire da rifiuti diversi dagli alberi di palma (foglie, stipite, rachide e infiorescenze tagliate manualmente).

Il compostaggio dei rifiuti di palma da dattero, è una tecnica importante per l'economia del sistema di oasi. Oltre alle dimensioni gestione dei rifiuti, consente emendamento regolare suolo. Tuttavia, questa tecnica richiede costosi investimenti in rettifica pinne e cumuli di gestione. Abbiamo sperimentato con dispositivi alternativi.
* La tecnica della lasagna, costituito da strati alternati di rifiuti verdi (non schiacciato) e di cartone. Si è dimostrato sia molto efficace e semplice da implementare. Questa tecnica, che concerna solo le foglie e le rachide  si sta diffondendo in tutto il giardino.  
* Il riciclaggio dei piccioli è stata condotta con la tecnica del terriccio. Consista a mettere i piccioli in mucchi (fatti di pallet), mescolando con un terzo di terra. Dopo un primo guasto, il risultato dimostrato infine positivo.
* Dopo l'osservazione della decomposizione naturale delle stipite sotto l'influenza di colonizzazione da vari insetti, si è proceduto al loro ragrupamento in vari punti del sito, dopo aver tagliato loro in piccole sezioni. L'agente principale di questa decomposizione è il cetonio dorato. 

 

FLORA

Dopo decenni di pratica orientate verso le mono-colture associate con le palme, il sito presento un’estrema povertà della biodiversità, in particolare in termini di strato erbaceo. Una terzo fase del’intervento è stato quello di implementare diversi dispositivi sperimentali destinati a ripristinare una copertura ecologica e sostenibile.
 
DISPOSITIVI DI RESTAURO DELLA BIODIVERSITÀ
Tre lotti sono stati seminati in primavera nel terreno. Tre tipi di ecobuage erano stata precedentemente eseguita (importante, media e bassa). I semi hanno dato luogo in poi a nessun intervento. I semi hanno dimostrato di essere più efficace in funzione del’importanza del’ecobuage. Delle aiuole sono stati anche delineati intorno alle palme e lungo le pareti delle terrazze. Per quanto riguarda l'evoluzione di questi dispositivi, diversi pianti sono stati introdotti in seguito in queste aree, tra cui erbe resistenti alla siccità (per ridurre il rischio di incendio) o pianti perenni (preferibilmente mellifere). Piantine seminate e introdotte da vivaio sono stati seguiti per un anno. Oltre a migliorare la biodiversità, l'obiettivo di questi dispositivi sperimentali e destinato a dare vita ad un ambiente equilibrato, che non richiede particolare manutenzione, tra cui il taglio sistematico della vegetazione 2 a 3 volti all’anno.
